MIMIR'S SKALDS

❧ MIMIR'S SKALDS

A skald for Mimir faces a fairly daunting goal: Everything must be recorded. Everything must be identified. Everything must be understood. Luckily, Mimir recognizes the impossibility of this occurring anytime in the near future - perhaps not even within the Wanderers' lifetimes. Instead, he simply asks you to do what you can.

Skalds are responsible for recording and studying the world around them, whether firsthand or through reports brought by Honir's scouts. Such topics as flora and fauna, geography, other cultures, magic, and the history of the world are all fair game, as well as many more. As long as you're researching and understanding some part of the world around you, you're doing your job as a skald. This sometimes requires (or at least benefits from) some experimentation, like "What happens if I crack open this rock?" or "I wonder what this plant does if you lick it?" - though it diverges sharply from Odin's vanguards in that they deal in grand-scale innovation and discovery while skalds remain rooted firmly in studying things as they already are.

Any critical discoveries made by a skald must be reported to the appropriate god or vocation. A skald's primary duty may be to study and understand, but it's nearly as crucial to make sure that Asgard as a whole is well-informed of any dangerous (or adversely, beneficial) things uncovered during those studies.

❖ how being a skald works:
Each month, head over to the Participation Sound-Off in which to let us/Mimir know what your character is researching or studying for the month! They're welcome to choose more than one topic, but keep in mind that splitting one's focus often yields lesser intellectual (and actual) rewards. Each skald who replies to the Sound-Off for the month will receive a discovery made about the subject of their study. Some will be very useful, some will be less so.

The Skald Needed top-level also exists for Mimir to direct the skalds' attention toward topics brought to him by scouts or other vocations via the Tip Line. Any skald can pick up one of these subjects for research, should they choose! Just reply to the relevant request to make sure it's known that they're doing so.

Another key facet of a skald's work is to pass on the information that they discover! If another vocation needs to hear about the discovery (like the sentinels, if danger is involved), be sure to drop a note on their Tip Line. Otherwise, skalds are duty-bound to do their best to simply report any findings of interest to the population at large. Knowledge is power, and our skalds hold quite a bit of it.

Connor probably would be interested because he's always just interested.

I think at first he's going to interview the person who discovered it and see what details they encountered. Next, he's going to try and take samples and then try and maybe re-enact some of the trials for himself based on what he's told happens, just to make sure it ...actually happens. Then he'll probably go to a regular lake in Asgard and see what a regular lake acts like and see what he can compare. That's all I can think of right now.

pardon this being on the mod journal

Feel free to contact Ariadne ICly for the interview!

Samples of what, exactly? c:

The trials are a success, in that they replicate the experience - I now see that we left out a word in the initial description, 'shoves you back with unseen force' is what it meant to say. Experimentation will notice a few different minor details:

- It doesn't feel like an invisible limb is pushing you, so much as a flat surface. It feels, if he experiments enough, like an invisible dome-shaped barrier appears long enough to radiate outward from the water's surface.

- It seems to have a very brief refractory period, and moving quickly enough (I'm not sure how quickly Connor, as an android, can move? but it requires inhumanly fast movement) lets you plunge your hand through before it pushes you again. If you manage to do so, you're able to touch the water's surface (unnaturally cold, but otherwise feels normal) for a moment before it shoves you back twice as hard as it otherwise would have, with bruising force if one is capable of bruising.

Normal bodies of water in Asgard act... pretty unremarkably, as you'd expect from any lake or pond.

Probably samples of the water which acts abnormally, buuuuut it doesn't sound like he could actually get any of that in this scenario lmfao. Sounds like he'd get as far as being able to tap on the barrier, as it were.

He can move, but not inhumanly fast. I don't think he'd manage to be able to push through the barrier if that's the case.

APRIL: GROUP INVESTIGATION (PAIRED WITH HEIMDALL'S SENTINELS)

Looking to investigate the blighted cave? Pair up with a sentinel and you can potentially glean some new info.

Ariadne found an anomaly. She's passing on the information to the skalds.
