MIMIR'S SKALDS

❧ MIMIR'S SKALDS

A skald for Mimir faces a fairly daunting goal: Everything must be recorded. Everything must be identified. Everything must be understood. Luckily, Mimir recognizes the impossibility of this occurring anytime in the near future - perhaps not even within the Wanderers' lifetimes. Instead, he simply asks you to do what you can.

Skalds are responsible for recording and studying the world around them, whether firsthand or through reports brought by Honir's scouts. Such topics as flora and fauna, geography, other cultures, magic, and the history of the world are all fair game, as well as many more. As long as you're researching and understanding some part of the world around you, you're doing your job as a skald. This sometimes requires (or at least benefits from) some experimentation, like "What happens if I crack open this rock?" or "I wonder what this plant does if you lick it?" - though it diverges sharply from Odin's vanguards in that they deal in grand-scale innovation and discovery while skalds remain rooted firmly in studying things as they already are.

Any critical discoveries made by a skald must be reported to the appropriate god or vocation. A skald's primary duty may be to study and understand, but it's nearly as crucial to make sure that Asgard as a whole is well-informed of any dangerous (or adversely, beneficial) things uncovered during those studies.

❖ how being a skald works:
Each month, head over to the Participation Sound-Off in which to let us/Mimir know what your character is researching or studying for the month! They're welcome to choose more than one topic, but keep in mind that splitting one's focus often yields lesser intellectual (and actual) rewards. Each skald who replies to the Sound-Off for the month will receive a discovery made about the subject of their study. Some will be very useful, some will be less so.

The Skald Needed top-level also exists for Mimir to direct the skalds' attention toward topics brought to him by scouts or other vocations via the Tip Line. Any skald can pick up one of these subjects for research, should they choose! Just reply to the relevant request to make sure it's known that they're doing so.

Another key facet of a skald's work is to pass on the information that they discover! If another vocation needs to hear about the discovery (like the sentinels, if danger is involved), be sure to drop a note on their Tip Line. Otherwise, skalds are duty-bound to do their best to simply report any findings of interest to the population at large. Knowledge is power, and our skalds hold quite a bit of it.
